Why We Overeat! #6 – A Mini-Meltdown

Recently, I was struggling in a phone interview with a reporter, trying to tell her how the rewiring tools of EBT work.

She was perplexed, and I was on the brink of seriously judging myself for not finding a good way to explain it. I told her how you can't think your way out of high-stress states, and you have to do an emotional dance.

What the brain needs to switch off cravings and negative moods is a complicated multi-step process. However, the EBT "Cycle Tool" makes it simple – and you learn the basics by using an app.

There is no guesswork involved. It's a simple skill.

To rapidly change our stress levels and our attendant "challenging" drives, whether it's for food, shopping, drinking, texting, or any of thousands of other ways we escape from being present that stress us out even more, the brain needs to:

  • Briefly activate the same level of stress you were in when the wire was encoded (this unlocks the wire so we can change it)
  • Then quickly switch off that stress and turn it into positive, rewarding emotions that make us feel great – so rewarded that we don't even want that food, drink, text, or (my favorite) online purchase!

The reporter paused, so I added one last detail: It's super quick. Emotions are like that. Thoughts are far slower and so is being mindfully aware, both taking 20 minutes to three hours to deactivate a strong drive or episode of stress overload. I told her that it takes a few minutes, usually four minutes or less!

Then she said, "Oh, so you are telling me that you have to have a "Successful Emotional Meltdown" and you can do that in four minutes?"
